TDI Nitrox

Enriched Air · More Bottom Time · Classroom Only

More bottom time, no dives to schedule. Diving enriched air instead of regular air pushes back your no-decompression limits, which means longer dives and shorter surface intervals, especially on multi-dive trips. The TDI Nitrox Diver course certifies you to dive mixes up to 40% oxygen, covering the physiology, gas planning, and how to analyze your own gas. It's entirely classroom and eLearning with a written exam and an oxygen analysis exercise, so there are no open water dives and no extra gear needed beyond your existing setup. It's also your first step toward technical diving.

Veterans can put their GI Bill toward their training, and families can use ESA or ClassWallet funds. See if you qualify.

TDI Nitrox Diver Course

Enriched Air · More Bottom Time · Classroom Only

Nitrox is the single most popular upgrade a diver can make, and for good reason. By diving enriched air instead of regular air, you push back your no-decompression limits, which means more bottom time and shorter surface intervals on repetitive dives. The TDI Nitrox Diver course qualifies you to dive mixes up to 40% oxygen, and because it's all classroom and knowledge development, there are no dives to schedule. It's also the first real step onto the technical diving path.

Why divers add nitrox

It's the certification most divers wish they'd done sooner:

  • More bottom time by extending your no-decompression limits
  • Shorter surface intervals between repetitive dives
  • Especially valuable on dive trips, where you're diving several times a day
  • Your first step toward technical training

What you'll learn

Nitrox is easy to dive but it has real rules, and this course makes sure you know them cold.

  • The benefits, hazards, and physiology of enriched air
  • Gas planning and equivalent air depth (EAD) calculations
  • Equipment, cylinder labeling, and how to analyze your gas
  • Working safely with mixes from EAN-22 through EAN-40

What it qualifies you for

Once certified, nitrox becomes a tool you can use on your own and build on.

  • Dive enriched air from EAN-22 to EAN-40 without supervision
  • Get more out of every dial-in on multi-dive trips
  • Move on to Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures
  • Continue toward rebreather and other technical training

Good to know

  • No open water dives required. This is a knowledge-development course: classroom study or eLearning, a hands-on oxygen analysis exercise, and a written exam.
  • No extra gear needed. Nothing is required beyond your existing open water setup, so there's nothing new to buy for this one.
  • You can complete the theory in person or through TDI eLearning, then finish the analysis exercise and exam with us.
  • It's an easy add-on before a dive trip, and a smart prerequisite to knock out ahead of technical courses.

Who can enroll

Nitrox is open early, so you can add it right alongside your entry-level training.

  • Certified Open Water divers, or those currently enrolled in an Open Water course
  • Minimum age 15 with parental consent, 18 without
  • Anyone who wants more bottom time or is eyeing technical diving

SDI or TDI nitrox?

We offer nitrox two ways, and either one certifies you to dive enriched air.

  • This TDI Nitrox course is framed as the technical-track version
  • Our SDI Computer Nitrox course is the recreational counterpart
  • Not sure which fits your goals? Call and we'll point you the right way

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do any dives for this?
No. TDI Nitrox is a knowledge-development course with no diving requirement. It's classroom study or eLearning, a hands-on oxygen analysis exercise, and a written exam.
What exactly is nitrox?
Nitrox, or enriched air, is breathing gas with more oxygen and less nitrogen than regular air. Less nitrogen means your body absorbs it more slowly, which extends your no-decompression limits and gives you more bottom time. This course certifies you up to 40% oxygen.
What are the prerequisites?
You need to be a certified Open Water diver, or currently enrolled in an Open Water course. The minimum age is 15 with parental consent, or 18 without.
Do I need to buy any equipment?
No. Nothing is required beyond your existing open water setup. There's no additional gear to buy for this course.
Will nitrox let me go deeper?
No, and that's an important point. Nitrox gives you more time at recreational depths, not more depth. In fact enriched air has a shallower maximum depth than air. The course covers exactly how to plan for that.
Does this lead to technical diving?
Yes. TDI Nitrox is the first step on the technical path. From here you can move on to Advanced Nitrox, Decompression Procedures, and rebreather training.
