SDI Computer Nitrox

Classroom Course · Enriched Air · No Dives Required

Longer bottom times, less fatigue. Nitrox, or enriched air, puts more oxygen and less nitrogen in your tank, so you get more time at depth and feel fresher after a day of diving. This course certifies you to fill and dive nitrox up to 40 percent oxygen. It's classroom only, no dives and no gear required, and it counts toward your Advanced Diver rating.

SDI Computer Nitrox Course

Classroom Course · Enriched Air · No Dives Required

Standard scuba air is about 21 percent oxygen. Nitrox, also called enriched air, shifts that mix higher on oxygen and lower on nitrogen, and that small change pays off big: more time at depth before your no-decompression limit, less fatigue after a day of multiple dives, and a wider safety margin on every dive. This course certifies you to use it. You'll learn the physiology, how to analyze a cylinder, and how to program your computer for a nitrox mix. It's classroom only, no dives required, and it counts toward your SDI Advanced Diver rating.

Why divers add nitrox

That extra oxygen shows up on every dive:

  • Extended no-decompression limits at depth
  • Less nitrogen loading, so less fatigue on multi-dive days and liveaboards
  • A wider safety margin within recreational limits
  • Fill and dive nitrox up to 40% oxygen anywhere that offers enriched air

What you'll learn

It's a focused classroom session that gets you ready to safely dive enriched air.

  • The physiology of nitrox, plus oxygen toxicity and its limits
  • Which gear needs to be oxygen-clean, and how to read a fill label
  • Analyzing a nitrox cylinder with an analyzer (you'll do at least two)
  • Programming your dive computer for a mix between 22 and 40 percent

Who can enroll

It's open to certified divers and current Open Water students, with a low age minimum since there's no in-water component.

  • Certified Open Water divers, or those currently enrolled
  • Minimum age 10 with parental consent, 18 without
  • Anyone who dives often or is planning a liveaboard
  • Divers who want longer, easier multi-dive days

✓ What's included

  • A focused classroom session with your instructor
  • Hands-on cylinder analysis (at least two cylinders)
  • Programming a dive computer for nitrox
  • Your SDI Computer Nitrox certification, plus a credit toward your Advanced Diver rating

Good to know

  • This is a classroom course, no dives and no gear required
  • Bring your certification card or Open Water enrollment documentation
  • Bring a way to take notes
  • Bring your own dive computer if you have one, it's handy to program during class

Frequently Asked Questions

What is nitrox diving?
Nitrox, or enriched air, is a breathing gas with more oxygen than standard air. Regular air is about 21 percent oxygen; recreational nitrox runs 22 to 40 percent. The extra oxygen means less nitrogen, which reduces nitrogen absorption and extends your no-decompression limits.
What are the benefits?
Three big ones: more bottom time at depth, less fatigue after multiple dives, and a wider safety margin compared to the same dive on air. The fatigue difference is most noticeable on liveaboards and any three-plus-dive day.
Is it worth getting certified for?
For most active divers, yes. It's a short classroom course, and the certification unlocks nitrox fills at any shop or resort that offers enriched air. If you dive several times a day or travel to dive, the extra bottom time pays off fast.
How long is the course?
It runs a couple of hours in the classroom. There are no pool or open water dives required.
Does it count toward the Advanced Diver rating?
Yes. Computer Nitrox is knowledge-only, and it's the one exception the SDI Advanced Diver program allows to count toward your four specialties. You'll still need three other specialties that include in-water dives.
Can I use any dive computer with nitrox?
Most modern recreational computers support nitrox, but check your model. You program the actual oxygen percentage of your fill before you dive so the computer figures your limits correctly. The course covers exactly how, and what happens if you don't.
