Frequently Asked Questions

What is DCI?
DCI stands for decompression illness, the range of injuries a diver can suffer from dissolved gas coming out of solution, including decompression sickness and arterial gas embolism. Emergency oxygen is the recognized first aid, and this course teaches you to recognize DCI and respond.
Do I need CPR or first aid first?
No prior training is required to take this course. That said, it's frequently taken alongside the FRTI CPR, First Aid, and AED course, since the two skill sets work hand in hand in a real emergency.
Is this required for professional dive courses?
Yes. Oxygen provider certification is required for the SDI Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and Open Water Scuba Diver Instructor programs, and the FRTI Oxygen Administration certification is accepted for all three.
Do I need to be a diver to take it?
It's written around dive emergencies, so it's most valuable to divers and dive leaders. If you dive with others, or work or volunteer around diving, it's well worth holding.
What kind of oxygen equipment will I use?
You'll get hands-on practice with the units and masks used in dive emergency response, including demand valves, non-rebreather masks, and pocket mask configurations, and you'll learn how to choose the right one for the situation.
How old do I need to be?
The minimum age is 10 with parental consent, or 18 without. No prior training or experience is required.
