Why We Chose SDI Over PADI (And What It Means for You as a Student)

People ask me this more than almost anything else when they walk into the shop. They've seen PADI's logo everywhere, on dive flags, on rental gear, on every shop window in the Valley, and then they get here and see SDI on our wall instead. It's a fair question, and it deserves a real answer instead of a marketing line. So here's the honest version, from me, on why Dive Arizona teaches SDI, what my own path through this looked like, and what any of it means for you as a student.

I Started as a PADI Instructor

I got certified in 2009 and fell in love with diving almost immediately. I kept going, kept traveling, and eventually earned my instructor rating through PADI in Roatan, Honduras, before going on to teach in Aqaba, Jordan. PADI is who I became an instructor through, it was the shop available to me at the time, and they did a fantastic job training me. PADI has done a fantastic job marketing and is one of the most recognized names in the diving world, and becoming an instructor through them felt like the natural next step, so that's what I went with. This isn't a story about PADI doing anything wrong. It's a story about what I found afterward.

Why I Made the Switch to SDI

In May 2016, I completed my SDI instructor crossover course and made it official, building Dive Arizona around SDI from there on. It wasn't a quick call, I thought it through for a while before committing, and years later I can say without hesitation that it was the right one. A few things drove it. SDI trains divers on modern dive computers from the very first open water dive instead of paper tables, which matches how people dive today. Its skill standards are flexible enough that I can give a nervous student more time on a skill instead of pushing everyone through on the same fixed timeline, and that flexibility is exactly what lets us teach the way we want to teach here. SDI also opens directly into TDI's technical diving track without switching agencies again later, so a student who falls in love with this sport has somewhere real to go.

There's a relationship side to it too, and it's a big part of why I have no regrets. When I call SDI's headquarters, I get someone who knows me and knows this shop, not a call center reading from a script. Over the years that's grown into something that feels like family. They've been supportive of Dive Arizona at every step, and we've grown a lot together since I made that switch.

What This Means for You as a Student

None of this is a judgment on the agency you may already be certified through, and it changes less than you'd think about your own experience here. You'll learn on a dive computer from day one instead of a paper table, which is the tool you'll be using on every dive for the rest of your diving life. Your instructor has the flexibility to slow down on a skill you're struggling with instead of moving the whole class along without you. And if you ever want to go further, whether that's Rescue Diver, Divemaster, or all the way into TDI's technical diving courses, the path is already built and it doesn't require switching agencies to get there. We've mapped out that entire journey, from Open Water through the technical track, in our full certification pathway guide if you want to see where it leads.

Your Certification Works the Same, No Matter Which Agency Issued It

This is worth saying plainly, because it matters more than the agency debate itself. PADI, SDI, SSI, and NAUI are all held to the same baseline entry-level standards through the World Recreational Scuba Training Council, so a dive shop anywhere in the world treats your Open Water card the same regardless of which logo is on it. Choosing SDI for Dive Arizona was about how we wanted to teach, not a claim that any other agency falls short. We wrote up a full, neutral breakdown of what differs between the four major agencies if you want to dig deeper, it's a good read before you commit to any shop.

If You're Already Certified Through PADI

You don't need to start over, and nothing about your existing certification changes. Come train with us for your next course, whether that's a refresher, a specialty, or Advanced Adventure, and we'll pick up right where your PADI card left off. Agencies only matter if you're a divemaster or instructor considering a professional crossover to teach at an SDI shop like ours, and even then it's a self-paced process, not a full recertification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Dive Arizona teach SDI instead of PADI?

SDI trains divers on modern dive computers from the first open water dive instead of paper tables, gives instructors more flexibility in pacing, and connects directly into TDI technical diving without switching agencies. It's a decision about teaching style, not a judgment on any other agency.

Is SDI as good as PADI?

Yes. Both are held to the same baseline entry-level standards through the World Recreational Scuba Training Council, and certifications from either agency are recognized at dive shops worldwide.

I'm already certified through PADI. Can I still train with Dive Arizona?

Yes, and nothing about your existing certification changes. You can move straight into a refresher, a specialty course, or Advanced Adventure with us regardless of which agency issued your original card.

When did Dive Arizona switch from PADI to SDI?

The shop's owner, Amanda Krugen, completed her SDI instructor crossover course in May 2016, after starting her instructor career through PADI and earning her rating in Roatan, Honduras. It was a deliberate decision made after years of teaching, not a quick change.

Does SDI lead into technical diving?

Yes. SDI is the recreational sister agency to TDI, the technical diving agency, so a diver can move from recreational courses straight into TDI's technical track without crossing over to a different agency.

If I'm a PADI-certified divemaster or instructor, can I teach at Dive Arizona?

Yes, through a professional crossover. It's mostly self-paced eLearning plus a seminar with an instructor trainer, not a full recertification, and it lets you teach and issue SDI certifications while keeping the experience you've already built.

Whichever agency your card says, we'd love to have you in the water with us. Give us a call and let's talk about where you are and where you want to go next.
