SDI Advanced Adventure

Beyond Open Water · 5 Specialty Dives · For Certified Divers

Open up the water below 60 feet. Advanced Adventure takes you deeper across five dives, two required (deep and navigation) and three specialties you choose, and clears you to 100 feet. Finish it and you're eligible for Rescue Diver. You'll need your own mask, fins, boots, and snorkel, and we include the rest: BCD, regulator, computer, tank, weights, and wetsuit.

Veterans can put their GI Bill toward their training, and families can use ESA or ClassWallet funds. See if you qualify.

SDI Advanced Adventure Diver Course

Beyond Open Water · 5 Dives · For Certified Divers

Your Open Water card gets you in the water. Advanced Adventure opens up everything below 60 feet. Over five dives you'll drop past your old depth limit, learn to navigate with a compass instead of following the reef, and sample three more specialties from the SDI catalog. Every dive counts as a credit toward a full specialty if you want to finish it later, and completing the course makes you eligible for the SDI Rescue Diver course, the one a lot of divers say is where their training got serious.

Your five dives

Deep Diver (required)

Every Advanced Adventure student does the Deep dive. You'll plan it, drop to as deep as 100 feet, run the dive to plan, and come up with a safety stop. This is the dive that clears your depth ceiling.

  • Descend to a max of 100 feet (30 m)
  • Plan, execute, and ascend with a safety stop
  • Junior divers 10 to 15 are capped at 70 feet

Navigation Diver (required)

The Navigation dive teaches you to move with purpose instead of just following the reef. You'll set reference points, run compass patterns on the surface, then execute square and triangle patterns on the bottom. Most divers wish they'd learned it sooner.

  • Natural navigation and reference points
  • Out-and-back and compass headings
  • Square and triangle patterns on the bottom

Then pick three electives

You choose three more specialties to round out your five dives. Current options include:

  • Advanced Buoyancy Control
  • Altitude Diver
  • Computer Nitrox Diver
  • DPV Diver
  • Full Face Mask
  • Marine Ecosystem Awareness
  • Night / Limited Visibility
  • Shore & Beach
  • Underwater Photographer
  • Underwater Videographer

More may be available depending on scheduling. Call us and we'll help you choose.

What you unlock

Finishing the course gives you three things your Open Water card doesn't:

  • Depth clearance to 100 feet (30 m) in conditions similar to your training
  • One dive credit toward each of the five specialties you sampled
  • Eligibility for the SDI Rescue Diver course, the prerequisite that opens it up

Who can enroll

Advanced Adventure is open to certified SDI Open Water divers, or holders of an equivalent certification. You'll be diving to real depth, so a solid Open Water foundation matters.

  • Certified SDI Open Water divers or equivalent
  • Minimum age 10 with parental consent, 18 without
  • Junior divers 10 to 15: Deep dive capped at 70 feet
  • Some electives have age minimums (Drysuit 12, limited-penetration Wreck 15)

✓ What's included

  • All five specialty dives with your instructor
  • Rental gear: BCD, regulator, computer, tanks, weights, and wetsuit
  • A dive credit toward each specialty you complete
  • A discount on any gear you buy while enrolled

What to bring

  • Your own mask, fins, boots, and snorkel (required, we don't rent these)
  • Your Open Water certification card
  • A swimsuit and a towel
  • Any of your own gear you'd rather dive

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Advanced Adventure course?
A five-dive course that introduces certified Open Water divers to five SDI specialty areas. Two dives are required, Deep and Navigation, and you choose three more. Each dive counts as one credit toward that full specialty certification.
How deep can I dive after finishing?
You're cleared to 100 feet in conditions similar to your training. Open Water limits you to 60 feet, so this is the course that removes that ceiling.
Do I need this before Rescue Diver?
Yes. Advanced Adventure is the prerequisite for the SDI Rescue Diver course. If Rescue is your goal, this is the next step from Open Water.
How many dives is it?
Five open water dives total: two required specialties, Deep and Navigation, and three elective specialties you choose.
Does it count toward specialty certifications?
Yes. Each specialty dive counts as one dive toward that full certification, so if you finish a specialty later, you won't repeat that first dive.
What gear do I need to own?
Your own mask, fins, boots, and snorkel, since those are personal-fit items we don't rent. Your BCD, regulator, computer, tank, weights, and wetsuit are all included.
What are the age requirements?
Minimum age is 10 with a parent's consent, or 18 on your own. Juniors 10 to 15 have some limits, like a 70-foot cap on the Deep dive, and your instructor confirms which specialties are open based on age.
