Private & One-on-One Scuba Lessons in Arizona: Who They're For

Most people learn to dive in a group, and for most people that works fine. But every group class moves at one pace, and that pace isn't right for everyone. Maybe you're nervous about putting a regulator in your mouth for the first time and don't want an audience while you work through it. Maybe your family wants to learn together without anyone feeling like they're the one holding the class back. Maybe you or your student learns differently and just needs more time on each skill before moving on. A private lesson is one instructor, one student (or one small group of your choosing), and a pace that's set by you instead of the calendar.

What Changes With a Private Lesson

The course content doesn't change. You still learn the same skills and meet the same certification standards as anyone else walking out with an SDI card. What changes is the room. No one else is watching you fumble with a mask clear. No one else needs to move on to the next skill while you're still working through this one. Your instructor's full attention is on you for the entire session, and the schedule bends around your availability instead of the other way around. For a lot of people, that single change is the difference between finishing certified and confident, or finishing certified and privately convinced they got lucky.

If You're Nervous About the Water

A lot of adults who call us aren't worried about the diving itself, they're worried about looking nervous in front of a room full of strangers. Breathing underwater for the first time is strange no matter who you are, and it's a lot easier to work through that strangeness without an audience. A private Try Dive session or a private Open Water course means your instructor can slow down exactly where you need to slow down, repeat a skill as many times as it takes, and never make you feel like you're the reason the group is running late. You're not failing a group's pace. You're the only pace there is.

If You're Learning as a Family

Families are one of the most common reasons people ask about private instruction. A parent and a teenager don't always pick up a new skill at the same speed, and in a group class the faster learner waits around while the slower one feels rushed and self-conscious. Booking a private class lets your family move through the material together, at whatever pace works for the people in it, with no one embarrassed to ask the instructor to run through something twice. It's a natural fit alongside the Youth Scuba Program for teens or the Future Buddies program for younger kids, both of which already build in a patient, kid-paced approach that a private session extends even further.

If You or Your Student Learns Differently

Some divers need more repetition on a skill before it clicks, more time to process instructions, or a quieter setting without a group of strangers to navigate on top of learning something new. That's true for some kids and adults with a learning difference or disability, and it's true for plenty of people without one too. A private lesson means your instructor can adjust how something is explained, how long a skill gets practiced, and how the session is paced, without anyone else's schedule to work around. The certification standards stay exactly the same. How you get there is what's flexible. If you have specific questions about what a session can accommodate, give us a call and we'll talk through it plainly before you book anything.

What Private Instruction Costs

A private Try Dive or Scuba Refresher session adds $25 to the course price for one-on-one instruction instead of a group setting. A private class for the full Open Water course or any specialty course adds a flat $250 to the course price, covering the instructor's dedicated time regardless of how many sessions it takes. There's no hourly billing and no surprise add-ons, the private option is simply listed alongside the group price so you know exactly what you're paying for before you book.

How to Book

Private lessons aren't a separate program with its own paperwork, it's an option on nearly every course we offer. Give us a call and tell us what you're looking for, whether that's a private Try Dive to test the water, a private Open Water course for your family, or a private session built around specific needs, and we'll get it scheduled around you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much more does a private scuba lesson cost compared to a group class?

It depends on the course. A private Try Dive or Refresher session adds $25 to the group price. A private Open Water course or specialty course adds a flat $250.

Do private lessons cover different material than group classes?

No. Private students learn the same skills and meet the same certification standards as anyone in a group class. What changes is the pacing and the amount of one-on-one attention, not the content.

Can my whole family take a private class together?

Yes. Private classes can be booked for a single student or a small group you choose, like a family, so everyone moves through the material at the same pace without a room full of strangers.

Do you offer private lessons for kids or teens with a learning difference or disability?

Yes, and we're happy to talk through what a session can look like before you book. Call the shop directly so we can discuss specific needs and make sure the pacing and setting work for your student.

Is a private lesson a good option if I'm just nervous about the water?

It's one of the most common reasons people book one. A private session means your instructor can slow down exactly where you need to, without a group waiting on you or watching you work through it.

Can I book a private lesson for just one skill I'm struggling with, not a whole course?

Give us a call and we'll figure out the right option. Sometimes that's a private refresher session, sometimes it's revisiting a specific skill before you finish a course you're already enrolled in.

Do private lessons take longer than group classes?

Not necessarily. Some students move faster one-on-one because there's no group to wait on, while others take extra sessions to get comfortable with a skill. Either way, the pace is set by you instead of a fixed class schedule.

However you learn best, there's a version of this that works for you. Give us a call and we'll build a private session around what you need.
