SDI Scuba Refresher Course
Your certification card never expires. Your muscle memory does. If it's been six months, a year, or longer since your last dive, that hesitation you feel before getting back in the water is completely normal, and it's exactly what the SDI Scuba Refresher Course is designed to clear up.
In one pool session, you'll go back through the core skills, get comfortable with the gear again, and walk out ready to get back on a boat without second-guessing yourself underwater.
What the Session Covers
The refresher is conducted in a pool, so there are no currents, no visibility issues, and no pressure to perform in open water before you're ready. Your instructor works through the skills at your pace, not a preset schedule.
The session covers:
- Gear setup, assembly, and pre-dive checks
- Mask clearing and regulator recovery
- Buoyancy control and underwater movement
- Emergency procedures and out-of-air drills
Who Should Take a Refresher
The SDI Scuba Refresher Course is for certified divers who haven't been in the water in a while and want to rebuild their skills and confidence before their next open water dive. There's no hard rule about how long is too long, but if you're feeling uncertain about any of the core skills, the refresher is the right call.
It's also a smart step before any trip where conditions will be demanding, like a liveaboard, a deep dive site, or anywhere current or limited visibility is a factor. Coming in sharp makes every dive better.
What to Bring
Your existing certification card (or proof of certification), a swimsuit or swimwear, and lots of excitement! Bring your mask, fins, boots, snorkel and any additional equipment you may want to use, we'll work with what you have.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can you go without diving before you need a refresher?
There's no universal rule, and your SDI certification never expires. That said, most agencies and dive operators recommend a refresher if it's been more than 12 months since your last dive. If you feel uncertain about any of the core skills, that's your best signal that a refresher is worth doing before your next open water dive.
What does a scuba refresher course cover?
The SDI Scuba Refresher Course covers gear setup and pre-dive checks, mask clearing and regulator recovery, buoyancy control, underwater movement, and emergency procedures including out-of-air drills. Everything is done in a pool so you can focus on the skills without open water variables.
Do I need a refresher if my certification never expires?
Your certification card doesn't expire, but the skills behind it need practice to stay sharp. A refresher isn't about re-earning your card. It's about getting comfortable again so your next dive goes well and you're not working through rust while you're underwater.
How long does a scuba refresher course take?
The entire session, including the pool, runs approximately two hours. The pace depends on where you are with the skills when you come in, and your instructor will work through everything until you feel solid.
Do I need to bring my own scuba gear?
Yes, you will need to provide your own mask, fins, boots, and snorkel. All other scuba equipment is included in the course. If you own gear and want to use it, you're welcome to bring it. Either way works fine.
Where does the scuba refresher course take place?
