The Scuba Refresher Course: How to Get Back in the Water After Years Away

Most divers who've been out of the water for a few years don't call the shop right away. They think about it, put it off, and quietly assume they'd have to start certification over from scratch, or that showing up rusty would be embarrassing. Neither is true. Your certification never expires, the skills come back faster than people expect, and one pool session with an instructor is usually all it takes to shake off the rust.

You're Not Starting Over

Your SDI Open Water certification is good for life. Nothing about a few years off changes that. What fades isn't the certification, it's muscle memory: clearing your mask without thinking about it, controlling your buoyancy without fighting it, reading your gauges on reflex instead of hunting for them. That's exactly what a Scuba Refresher rebuilds, and it's a normal, expected part of coming back to diving, not a sign you did something wrong the first time.

What the Refresher Covers

The Scuba Refresher is one pool session with an instructor, currently $89, and it's built to rebuild exactly the skills that go soft when you're not diving regularly. You'll run through mask and regulator skills, buoyancy control, underwater swimming, and emergency procedures, the same fundamentals from your original certification, just refreshed under an instructor's eye instead of relearned from zero. Most divers are surprised how much comes back within the first ten minutes.

What You Need to Bring

You'll need your own mask, fins, boots, and snorkel, the personal-fit gear we don't rent out. We provide the rest from our rental gear: BCD, regulator, and tank. If your own gear has been sitting in a closet for a few years, it's worth a quick check before your session, but you don't need to buy anything new just to get back in the pool.

How Fast You Can Be Diving Again

One session, and you're current. There's no multi-week course to re-enroll in and no exam to retake. Book a time that works, show up with your personal gear, spend a couple of hours in the pool, and you're cleared to get back to open water dives. For most returning divers, the hardest part of this whole process is picking up the phone, not the actual diving.

If you're wondering how you ended up this rusty in the first place, our post on how often you should dive after getting certified breaks down how quickly skills fade and how to keep that from happening again.

Pair It With a Trip

A refresher session is also the easiest way to get real momentum back. Divers who book a refresher right before an upcoming trip show up to their destination confident instead of rusty, which tends to make the whole trip more fun. You don't need a trip booked to get refreshed, but if you've been eyeing one, this is the natural first step.

If You Never Finished Certifying

The refresher is for divers who are already certified. If you took a class years ago but never finished, or you're not sure your card is even real, the refresher isn't the right starting point. Give us a call and we'll figure out where you stand, or look at Open Water certification if you're starting fresh.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to retake my full certification if it's been years since I dove?

No. Scuba certifications don't expire. If you're rusty, a single Scuba Refresher pool session brings your skills back without redoing the full certification course.

How long is the Scuba Refresher course?

It's one pool session with an instructor, typically a couple of hours, covering mask and regulator skills, buoyancy control, underwater swimming, and emergency procedures.

How much does the Scuba Refresher cost?

The current price is $89 for one pool session with an instructor.

What gear do I need to bring to a refresher session?

Your own mask, fins, boots, and snorkel. BCD, regulator, and tank are provided as part of the session.

How many years away from diving is too many for a refresher to fix?

There's no cutoff. Whether it's been two years or twenty, the refresher is built to rebuild the same fundamental skills. An instructor will work at your pace and let you know if anything beyond the standard session would help.

Can I do a refresher right before an upcoming dive trip?

Yes, and it's one of the most common reasons divers book one. A refresher a week or two before a trip means you show up ready instead of guessing your way through the first dive.

Is it embarrassing to admit I'm rusty and need a refresher?

No. Skills fading after a few years away from diving is the norm, not the exception, and a refresher session exists precisely for that reason. Instructors run these sessions constantly and treat rusty skills as routine, not remarkable.
